Polystyrene Plastic(PS)

* PS plastic - polystyrene. It is a class of plastics including styrene group in the macromolecular chain, the main varieties include general polystyrene (GPPS), high impact polystyrene (HIPS), expandable polystyrene (EPS) and metallocene polystyrene (SPS) and so on. Its characteristics are colorless, odorless and tasteless.

What is PS Plastic?

Polystyrene is a colorless and transparent thermoplastic, general-purpose polystyrene resin is an amorphous polymer, of which expanded polystyrene is commonly known as Styrofoam. It has a glass transition temperature higher than 100 degrees Celsius, so it is often used to make a variety of disposable containers that need to withstand the temperature of boiling water, such as styrofoam boxes.

What can you make with PS Plastic?

PS has good transparency (light transmission rate of 88% -92%) and surface gloss, easy to dye, high hardness, good rigidity, in addition, there is good water resistance, chemical resistance and processing flow performance. Its main disadvantages are: brittle, low impact strength, easy to stress cracking, poor heat resistance.
PS is the lowest point of production cost of plastic, widely used in disposable products. It is widely used in disposable products, such as disposable tableware, and stationery and other daily necessities.

Polystyrene (PS)  Characteristics

* Depending on the type of PS it could be classified as a “thermoplastic” or a “thermoset” material. The name has to do with the way the plastic responds to heat. Thermoplastic materials become fully liquid at their melting point (210-249 degrees Celsius in the case of Polystyrene), but they begin to flow at their glass transition point (100 degress Celsius for PS).

 * A major useful attribute about thermoplastics is that they can be heated to their melting point, cooled, and reheated again without significant degradation. Instead of burning, thermoplastics liquefy, which allows them to be easily injection molded and then subsequently recycled. Thermoset plastics, by contrast, will not reliquify once they are “set” in solid form.

How is PS material made?

Polystyrene (PS) is prepared by synthesis (polymerization) methods such as propriety polymerization, suspension polymerization, emulsion polymerization, ionic polymerization and so on. Industrial application is more body polymerization and suspension polymerization. Now the industrial production of PS series resins are produced by continuous polymerization method.

The PS resin produced by polymerization has good transparency and electrical properties, but there is a relative molecular mass distribution is not uniform, while the suspension polymerization due to the temperature is easy to control, the reaction heat is easy to disseminate, the production of PS resin has a uniform molecular weight distribution, the characteristics of the comprehensive performance, but the product will leave a small amount of dispersion in the product, and so on.
